Earlier this year Africa appointed only its second woman as leader of a country, when Joyce Banda was sworn in as President of Malawi after the sudden death of Bingu wa Mutharika.
Since President Banda took over, she has been able to re-establish ties with countries such as the UK, and obtain a $157mn IMF loan to assist rebuilding the country which was running into considerable economic issues. She got rid of a presidential jet and an entourage of 60 cars that she felt were inappropriate when the rest of the counrty was living in such poverty.
Banda is a champion of women’s rights and the promotion of women in Malawian society, and the work of MLF fits perfectly with her attitude to helping women contribute to society. She has also been instrumental in repealing a number of unpopular laws that had previously infringed human rights and freedom.
